Woodford walkway revamp project nears completion
People occupying flats to rent in Woodford will see a major overhaul to a busy walkway over the A406 flyover completed in the next few weeks.
The busy access route has been transformed with new pedestrian facilities, including paving, benches, lighting, trees and plants, with a circular artistic bench area outside the South Woodford Library among the enhancements.
A public art project of tree sculptures, which light up at night, has been created by artist Lucien Simon, while Tim Ward has produced the feature benches and is also set to work on a decorative central paved area composed of natural stone paving and small mosaic tiles.
The artwork emblazoned on the benches honours the rich history of the area and celebrates local figures such as Sylvia Pankhurst and Sir Winston Churchill, with all contributors set to be invited to view the finished work soon.
Developers of nearby housing projects have provided funding for the art projects, while the paving, planters and lighting were created using a grant from Transport for London.
The tree sculptures and benches are already in place, while new brick planters have also been implemented, complete with trees and shrubs.
Mr Ward said: "I'm really pleased with the benches and the community have been very generous with their time to help me make sure the artwork ties in with the local area.
"Now they're installed you can see my benches and Lucien's sculptures really complement each other. I'm really excited to see it all nearly completed."
Earlier this month, Redbridge Council announced that a special exhibition called London Pride will be taking place in the region to coincide with the Queen's visit to the area on March 29th 2012.
It will allow local residents to view some of the world's best art and design projects, including paintings and small sculptures from the Tate Gallery and memorabilia from the London Transport Museum.
