Waltham Forest celebrates its diversity
London is alive with cultural diversity and this is one of the many reasons why so many people love living and working in the capital.
It is often described as a multicultural melting pot where people from all over the world can live together in harmony, and this is seen quite clearly in a number of the city's boroughs.
Waltham Forest is certainly one of them, and its why, among other things, property to rent in Walthamstow, Leyton, Chingford and other parts of the borough is so attractive.
In fact residents are so proud of the diversity in their area that they staged a celebratory event on Saturday October 27th to bring everyone together.
It was staged to celebrate a successful campaign to prevent the English Defence League (EDL) from marching through Waltham Forest's streets for a second time in as many months.
The far-right group was planning to protest in the borough on October 27th but were prevented from doing so by the Home Office after it received a petition from a council-led delegation.
More than 5,000 signatures from local people and businesses were included, highlighting the widespread anger over any attempts to disrupt harmony in Waltham Forest.
The EDL was also prevented from staging static demonstrations in the borough and was instead permitted to protest for just an hour outside the House of Commons.
On the day itself there was a heavy police presence in Waltham Forest, although disruption was minimal and instead the streets were filled with people celebrating.
The event was organised by Waltham Forest Council and featured a host of activities for everyone to get involved in, including table football, arts and crafts and fun fair rides for children.
Local resident Mireya Arellano said: "The best thing to do in response to this type of aggression is to come together. It is great that the council is supporting the people and the community."
The borough of Waltham Forest lies in North-East London and is often seen as part of the East End.
