Two Hackney parks get makeovers
Individuals can now enjoy improvements made to two parks in Hackney.
London Fields and Daubeney Fields have both received a makeover thanks to the hard work of a group of local volunteers. The enhancements are among the first steps being taken by the borough as it seeks to implement the Hackney Biodiversity Action Plan 2012-17, which was produced by the Hackney Biodiversity Partnership and co-ordinated by the council.
These green spaces offer the perfect opportunity for people to experience nature and may appeal to anyone looking at property to rent in Hackney. The London Fields User Group and the council worked in partnership with 14 volunteers to have a community orchard packed with fruit trees installed in the area, while a new meadow was added to Daubeney Fields.
Morello Cherry, Newton Wonder, Kent Cob Nut, Queen Cox, May Duke Cherry, Greengage and Merryweather are among the species of trees planted in the orchard. All of the vegetation is historically native to south-east England and its importance to birds, insects and other forms of wildlife can be seen by the fact it was added to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitat.
Team London provided a £1,000 grant to help fund the work, while the creation of wildflower meadows and further shrub planting is also being looked at.
Councillor Jonathan McShane, Hackney Council's cabinet member for health, social care and culture, noted the borough is committed to "improving and enhancing its parks and green spaces through initiatives like [these]".
"I hope local people will get involved with harvesting the fruits in the future as this is a great way for Hackney's residents to connect with where their food comes from and get involved with the benefits of local growing," he added.
Chair of the London Fields User Group Mike Martin added that everyone who came out had a great day, while the park is also going to benefit from the improved biodiversity as a result of the changes.
