Redbridge announces plans for improved swimming access
New plans have been announced that will see a new 25-metre, four-lane community swimming pool open to the public. The pool at Loxford School of Science and Technology will have extended access under the new £1.5 million project announced by Redbridge Council.
The plans to extend use of the pool at the school follow on from the council looking into the development of a new £3.25 million public pool at Mayfield School. However, by extending the use of the pool at Loxford, the council is further able to address the need for better community swimming access in the borough.
Councillor Wes Streeting, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “It’s fantastic that Loxford School of Science and Technology have come on board to expand access to swimming for our community. This shows how serious we are about solving the long-standing issue of poor swimming pool provision in the borough.
“We’ve heard the message from the public loud and clear: thousands of people want to be able to learn to swim and to improve their health and fitness. We believe it’s vitally important for better public health and social justice that those needs are met - particularly in areas of the borough with high levels of deprivation and poor health, like Loxford."
Once improvements have been made to the pool, it will be open to the local community from 4.30pm to 10pm Monday to Friday and then 9am to 9pm at the weekends. The pool will also be open from 9am to 10pm Monday to Friday throughout the school holidays.
Anita Johnson, head teacher of Loxford School of Science and Technology, said the school is "delighted" to be part of the plans to bring more swimming access to the people of the borough. She continued to say she believes the plans will see an important step made for the school and the residents of Redbridge.
The proposals to extend the use of the pool and to construct the new facilities at Mayfield School will be discussed at the Health, Leisure and Older People Service Committee on Monday January 5th.
