London set for Olympic broadband boost
The development of broadband internet services for the Olympics will turn London into a major broadband hub for the UK, it has been stated.
Head of Olympic regeneration for Hackney Council, Guy Nicholson, said the new Olympic park network could become a "model" for a high-speed fibre network for the whole UK.
Vice president for the London 2012 delivery programme for BT Stuart Hill said the power of the Olympic network will be very large to enable it to process an exceptionally large amount of broadcast online information during the games.
"We will need to be handling six gigabytes every second, the equivalent of 6,000 novels or the entire content of Wikipedia," he stated.
Part of the contract is designed to ensure that business, schools and homes can gain access to the new broadband network.
This could be good news for those who rent in Hackney and elsewhere in the London network, as they will be able to access these high-speed services.
Hackney's mayor James Pipe has already noted via the council website that the borough, which will host one-third of the Olympic venue space including the media centre, is to gain from the games in a number of respects, including extra public transport.
