Does Hackney have the greenest spaces in London?
Hackney may be on its way to becoming recognised as being one of the most green boroughs in London, new research suggests.
The area was recognised as having some of the best parks and green spaces in Britain after being awarded a record 17 Green Flags.
According to Hackney Council, Albion Square and Aske Gardens were given the top parks award for the first time this year, while 15 other green spaces in the area were also noted for their sustainability.
The news will undoubtedly be of interest to homemovers who have a special appreciation of green landscapes.
Commenting on the developments, councillor Jonathan McShane, cabinet member for Health, Social Care and Culture at Hackney Council, said that the council is 'delighted' to have picked up so many awards.
He added: To gain another two on top of the 15 we successfully maintained is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Parks team, user groups and volunteers, who strive to make and keep our parks the best they can be.
"Having access to well-managed, quality green space is vital to people’s health and wellbeing, and quality of life, and the Flags highlight that the residents of Hackney are enjoying green space of the very highest order."
Keep Britain Tidy is the organisation behind the accolades, which aims to give greater recognition to areas that have the highest standards and are well maintained.
In addition to having some of the most well-kept parks in London, the borough also has the highest proportion of open space of any inner London borough.
To receive the award, parks must also submit a five-year plan for continued maintenance and improvement.
Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
