Wood Green: Cheap living with a lot to offer
Wood Green is a great area in North London that supplies many of the activities and amenities that you want on your doorstep. Located in the borough of Haringey, it offers a wide range of benefits that mean not having to venture further into the city in order to find something to do.
With a good number of shops, cinemas and restaurants as well its Tube Stations, Wood Green is a great place for families and young professionals who fancy benefitting from that medium-sized town feel while also being close to the range of options that a city affords. As well as having plenty to do, housing in Wood Green is very reasonably-priced, offering a range of rental options that won't put too much of a dent in your back account.
Splashing the cash
Probably one of the best things about Wood Green is the high number of opportunities for shopping it offers residents, without the need for travelling further into the city. The large shopping complex that stretches between Wood Green and Turnpike Lane stations gives you plenty of options for all your retail needs.
Both recognisable high street stores and market stalls are housed within the indoor mall, which allows people of all incomes to benefit from a variety of store types. As well as budget shops and fashion options, the busy high street also has a number of supermarkets, meaning that everyday shopping is also incredibly easy.
As well as shopping Wood Green also offers a range of pubs, clubs and food establishments as well as a couple of cinemas. These amenities allow any night owls to enjoy a good time without having to venture too far from their doorstep, a big plus when it comes to travel expenses. The variety of pubs and restaurants adds to the interesting multicultural element that the area offers.
Historical aspects
If clubbing and shopping aren't your things, Wood Green also offers a number of historical attractions, which make interesting days out. Alexandra Palace has a lot to offer residents throughout the year, as well as having an interesting history. Although the palace has now been turned into an exhibition centre that also contains an ice rink, it was once the site of the original BBC television transmissions and served as a recreation and environment centre during the Victorian era.
You might also enjoy a visit to either the Bruce Castle Museum or the Wood Green Library, both of which are excellent opportunities to learn about Haringey's history and enjoy a bit of art and culture. The library especially is a must see and offers a range of amenities for most age groups.
Housing options
There are many residential estates throughout Wood Green that offer different property types for a range of affordable prices. When you leave the main shopping areas and the high street, the architecture is mostly Victorian, creating an incredibly picturesque place to live. Renting in Woods Green is very reasonable and so it is a popular choice for those that commute into the Central London for work. As you get closer to the Tube Stations - all of which are on the Piccadilly line - property prices increase, as with any area throughout the capital.
Many of the properties throughout Wood Green fall within conservation areas, meaning that they have been able to maintain their original look and appeal. As well as large numbers of Edwardian and Victorian properties, these areas also contain open and green spaces, allowing residents to enjoy that small town feel on their doorstep.
The most attractive part of housing within this area is the price. As well as young families and professionals, there are a number of students and young people in shared accommodation, which adds to the lively and varied atmosphere. In many of the residential areas there is a strong sense of community, which incites many residents to stay put for a number of years.
Parking amenities
The majority of parking throughout Wood Green is residential, requiring drivers to buy permits for their cars. There are also plenty of places to park, meaning you don't have to worry about trying to beat the rush home in order to get a space near to your house. Pay-and-display parking is also available as a short term option, especially in the shopping areas.
Transportation
As well as Wood Green and Turnpike Lane Tube Stations, which are both located in zone three, the area is also serviced by a regular bus service that runs 24 hours a day. The bus service runs to Trafalgar Square, offering residents easy access to the city's offerings and a safe route home in the evenings.
Along with the Tube Stations, travel to areas outside of the city is made easy by the two rail stations within Wood Green. Alexandra Palace and Bowes Park both offer a range of train services that make travel to the rest of the country incredibly easy without the need for having to get into the city.
Schools
There are a number of good performing schools, as well as a new comprehensive within the Wood Green area, allowing parents the chance to place their children in good educational settings. As transport links are so good, there is also the option of sending children to some of the private schools that are slightly further afield.
All in all, Wood Green is an up-and-coming area of North London that offers a great variety of opportunities and things to do. With such reasonable rental prices, many people are now opting to live in areas of Haringey in order to save some cash and enjoy a more peaceful environment.
