Tenants advised on election eligibility
Tenants of property to rent in Mile End, flats to rent in Whitechapel or other letting residences in the borough of Tower Hamlets such as Bow are being targeted by the local council to ensure they are able to vote at the next elections.
A statement from Tower Hamlets Council said that the authority has started its annual audit to ensure eligible residents are included on the Register of Electors, ahead of a new publication of the list on December 1st this year.
It indicated that it is "more important than ever" to make sure people are correctly registered with a UK parliamentary election and a local ballot scheduled for next year.
"As well as making sure local people can have their say in elections, the register is also used as a means of reference in applications for bank accounts and loans, so it is important you are registered," the council commented.
Tenants who have just moved into property to rent in Tower Hamlets will be among those who may be wrongly registered. Updating these records is one of the numerous administrative tasks renters must complete when finding a new place to live.
