New homes built in Enfield
New homes are being built in Enfield, it has been reported. An announcement by Enfield Council revealed that it will be building some of the first council housing in the area for 30 years.
It recently gained planning permission to redevelop seven small sites around Enfield Town and Chase Side.
In order to make way for the developments, the council demolished six sheltered housing blocks in July 2012.
Work is also set to begin on a seventh site, which has been added to the scheme. The council has also gained permission to remove the last remaining block in the Forty Hill area of Enfield.
Over £700,000 was pumped into the project, which will include 94 high quality new properties including 37 affordable homes owned by the council for shared ownership or rent next year.
Councillor Ahmet Oykener, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for housing, said the initiative will help to plug a shortfall in housing.
He added: "This is great news for residents and it will be very exciting to follow the progress of the development and see people that are in need of a home of their own moving into their new property.
"This scheme is a good example of how councils can solve a shortage of affordable housing by using an innovative and imaginative way of getting round problems for the benefit of the wider community."
The properties will be a mix of of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes.
Enfield is home to a number of sports and recreational centres, including the Queen Elizabeth II athletics stadium, the Enfield Ignatians Rugby Club and various football playing fields.
It is also home to Oak Hill Theological College, an associate college of Middlesex University and Capel Manor College.
Additionally, a number of private schools are based in the area. One of the most notable is the Latymer School in Edmonton, one of the best performing schools in the borough at both GCSE and A-level.
