Enfield Council given top accolade for promoting equality

Enfield Council given top accolade for promoting equalityAn initiative of the Local Government Association (LGA), the awards scheme is geared towards recognising councils that make a concerted effort to provide fair services for all their residents, regardless of background.

Now, with 11 local authorities across the UK having already been recognised as ‘excellent’ in this regard, Enfield Council has been credited for its work over the past decade.

In particular, the last ten years has seen the Greater London Authority step up its community engagement efforts, with the most recent resident satisfaction survey indicating that this proactive approach has been paying off.

At the same time, the ‘excellent’ accreditation also takes into account the fact that Enfield Couicl has developed a strong understanding of the diverse needs all its residents have.

Welcoming the news, the council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing and public health, Christine Hamilton noted that the award is testament to its ongoing commitment to provide all residents “with services which ensure fairness for all”, though she added that her team will not be resting on their laurels.

“We will continue to strive to maintain all our services at the ‘excellent’ level, and ensure equality plays a central part in the way we deliver all our services,” she said.

News of the recognition comes just days after Enfield Council launched a new campaign aimed at cleaning up the borough’s residential areas.

With complaints of messiness as frequent as ever, the new Cleaner Streets Campaign is calling on residents to do their bit to keep their own neighbourhoods clean by reporting problems, as well as the people causing them.

According to the cabinet minister for the environment, Councillor Chris Bond, it is hoped that the scheme will enable the council to reduce the amount of money it spends on cleaning up its streets, with last year’s bill coming to around £4.8 million.
