Enfield Council: Energy bills slashed for residents in the borough
Enfield Council has undertaken a drive to slash the energy bills for thousands of households living in the borough, it has been revealed.
The local authority has teamed up with British Gas to invest £3 million to carry out a major energy efficiency programme to 101 flats in Scott House, Edmonton this month (April).
Work was carried out on the first 1,000 poorest homes in the borough and the scheme included the installation of wall and roof insulation as well as double glazing.
In addition, the oil powered boiler in the tower block was replaced with a more economical gas one. The council said that this new programme will save households 40 per cent on their energy bills, which equates to around £400 a year.
The saving relates to the cost of central heating, hot water, electricity and gas bills over the course of a year.
British Gas agreed to fund the energy efficiency works through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).
Commenting on the scheme, Enfield Council's cabinet member for housing, councillor Ahmet Oykener, said that the council is 'enormously' proud of their project.
He added: "To have delivered millions of pounds of investment and reduce residents' energy bills is superb. In partnership with big business we are reducing energy bills and making Enfield's homes warmer.
"This pioneering scheme will help lift many of our poorest households out of fuel poverty at a time when the cost of electricity and gas continues to rise."
He added that the project will also help local jobs and businesses.
This is one of many initiatives taking place across Enfield this month. The council also announced - in addition to home improvements - thousands of new primary school places are set to be made available in the borough.
