Enfield awarded for clean streets
Enfield Council has been awarded a 2014 Clean Britain Award following on from its hard work to keep the area's streets tidy. The borough received a Five Star award at the Clean Britain awards ceremony, which was held on November 26th. It was also given a bronze award in the category that included areas with more than 200,000 residents.
On the list of concerns for Enfield's residents, litter is always within the top three. To combat this, the council has invested in street cleaning throughout the last three years. This has led to much cleaner streets throughout Enfield.
Councillor Chris Bond, Enfield Council's cabinet member for Environment and Community Safety, said: “We continue to invest in street cleaning because clean streets benefit communities in several ways.
"A clean, safe and hygienic environment plays an important role in fostering a sense of civic pride and reducing the likelihood of antisocial behaviour.
"A clean environment can also attract and sustain increased levels of commerce and tourism, which are vital to our local economies and in helping to sustain local businesses. Enfield is a pleasant, clean and green borough and we’re determined to keep it that way.”
This is the 25th year that the Clean Britain Awards have been running and rewarding those local authorities that take extra steps to ensure their streets are kept as clean as possible for residents and maintain high-quality environments.
The programme helps to promote successful schemes undertaken by councils, while also raising awareness of the issues that can be caused by litter and unclean environments.
Over the last few years, Enfield has worked tirelessly to improve conditions, developing Tidy Teams and a number of innovative ways to deliver street cleaning. The borough council has also adopted more effective residential area cleaning.
These, along with improvements in the areas national performance target over the last few years, effective fly tip collection and work to remove graffiti have all helped Enfield Council achieve this latest award.
