UK lodgers 'increasing'
Since 2006, the number of lodgers in the UK has increased by 23 per cent, new figures have revealed.
The Halifax Home Insurance show estimates that there are around 970,000 lodgers in the UK and around 200,000 homeowners have taken in a lodger in the past three years.
And while 55 per cent of new landlords took lodgers for financial reasons, 17 per cent said they were unable to pay the mortgage without assistance from such tenants.
Commenting on the news, Jonathan Moore, UK country manager at Easyroommate.co.uk, said: "Everybody has had to tighten their belts quite a lot, therefore to meet mortgage payments et cetera, people are taking in a lodger."
However, people could find that flats to rent in Kensington or another part of the capital afford them more privacy and freedom than sharing a house with its owners.
Indeed, renting a home could also mean that tenants have the peace of mind that they will have a longer period of notice should they need to move out.
