Tower Hamlets city bid receives Olympic athlete support
Residents of flats to rent in Tower Hamlets have seen the area's bid to receive city status win support from one of Britain's most promising Olympic athletes.
Perri Shakes-Drayton, a resident of nearby Bow and a medal prospect for the 400m hurdles event at the 2012 Games in London, has thrown her support behind the local council's lobbying efforts.
Tower Hamlets is one of 26 towns that are in the running for the honour as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, with rivals included Luton, Middlesbrough and Reading.
However, Ms Shakes-Drayton believes Tower Hamlets should be chosen because of its thriving culture and community, which she has experienced first-hand during her time attending primary and secondary school in the area.
Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman added: "I am thrilled to have Perri's support for the bid, as she is a great ambassador for the borough. I wish her all the best in the upcoming Games."
The borough's city bid has already received the backing of residents and local businesses, as well as former lord mayor of London Sir Michael Bear and celebrity builder Tommy Walsh.
