Plans signed off for Kensington & Chelsea road refurbishment
People living in property to rent in Kensington & Chelsea are set to benefit from a new initiative which will see the part-pedestrianisation of Exhibition Road.
The design for the shared space project has been updated to remove road kerbs, creating a single-level surface in the style of a Continental boulevard.
Pedestrians and traffic will be separated by black cast iron drainage covers and, for the safety of people who are visually impaired, strips of ridged pavement known as corduroy tactile will be installed along the edge of the safe zone.
Furthermore, the single-level surface will encourage motorists to drive more safely, planners hope.
"It's our responsibility to consider all users as we work to transform Exhibition Road and we believe that this design, combined with the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit, will substantially improve safety and accessibility for everyone," said councillor Nicholas Paget-Brown.
Planners hope that the Exhibition Road scheme will create a more user-friendly space in the London borough by 2011, ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
Shared space projects have previously been deemed a success in the Netherlands, which is home to the well-established concept spaces of Drachten and Haren.
