Plans for Tottenham regeneration unveiled
Haringey Council has today (August 1st) unveiled plans to redevelop Tottenham over the next decade. The proposals are intended to help communities affected by last summer's London riots recover from the damage.
The scheme covers everything from new housing and community centres to better business facilities and more outdoor public spaces.
Speaking at the launch of the plans, Claire Kober, Haringey Council leader, commented: "Commitment to, and investment in, Tottenham by both the council and the Mayor of London has brought renewed confidence to and laid the foundations for change."
She added the 'Plan for Tottenham' is designed to improve the local area and make it "a place everyone is proud to be a part of".
A number of key areas for development have been singled out, including Northumberland Park, Seven Sisters, Tottenham Green, High Road and Tottenham Hale.
One of the main projects outlined in the document is the regeneration of Tottenham High Road, while a new town centre is planned for Tottenham Hale.
These schemes could all contribute to making houses and flats to rent in Tottenham more popular, while a further aim of the proposals is to attract greater business investment to the area.
In order to measure how the plans are progressing, a series of important milestones have been laid down and these will be monitored over the coming months and years.
According to the Haringey Independent, the proposals will help create 5,000 more jobs, as well as see 10,000 new homes constructed in this part of London.
Last month, work began on the construction of football team Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium, which will also see parts of the surrounding area regenerated. The Premier League football club decided to move ahead with the project after losing out to West Ham United in its bid to use the Olympic Stadium as its new ground.
In addition to the 56,000 seat stadium, a new Sainsbury's supermarket and other commercial premises will also be constructed.
