Plaistow: A well-situated residential area
People seeking flats to rent in Plaistow will find that the area provides them with a well-connected place to live, with various local amenities and points of interest in the immediate vicinity.
Part of the borough of Newham, the district is a primarily residential area which has been part of the greater London area since the 1960s and is home to a large and multicultural population.
It has undergone extensive change over the last six decades or so, with much of its industrial infrastructure having been destroyed during the second world war, which coincided with an influx of immigrants from former colonies.
Today, Plaistow's population stands at more than 25,000, including sizeable Asian and black communities, with data from the 2001 census revealing that 77 per cent of residents are happy with their area as a place to live, representing one of the highest rates in the borough of Newham.
Transport to and from this part of London is facilitated by the presence of the Plaistow underground station, which provides access to the Circle, District and Hammersmith lines, while a variety of bus routes also run through the area.
People who choose to make their home in Plaistow will find that a wide range of local amenities are available, including practical services and leisure facilities.
Plaistow Park is located half a mile from the Tube station and is open from dawn until dusk, offering a football pitch, games and play areas and a paddling pool, as well as eye-catching floral displays.
Those seeking to get fit can do so at Balaam Leisure Centre, which offers exercise facilities, swimming pools and training sessions, while residents can also unwind in a different way at the Black Lion Pub, one of the oldest landmarks the area has to offer.
Another attractive feature of Plaistow is its proximity to the West Ham area, which means the popular Green Street shopping district, home to more than 400 independent shops, including a diverse selection of Asian stores, award-winning curry houses and designer fashion labels.
This area is also the location of the Boleyn Ground, home of the world-famous Championship football side West Ham United, which helps to make Plaistow an attractive destination for sports lovers.
Families moving to the area will also have access to a wide variety of schools, including nearby primary establishments such as Curwen Primary and Nursery School, Southern Road Primary School and Plaistow Primary School, as well as schools for older students such as Plaistow Jamia Islamia and Newham Sixth Form College.
People who choose to relocate to Plaistow can rest assured that the area will continue to grow and develop, as various council and community schemes are currently underway to introduce wide-ranging improvements to facilities.
Since the 1990s, various initiatives have been put in place to tackle unemployment, reduce crime, improve the look of the area and bring new businesses and residents to the district, including Plaistow's Respect Campaign and the constant improvements happening in Green Street.
Such measures will ensure Plaistow remains an attractive place to live over the coming years.
