NLA offers tips to renting politicians
After claiming expenses for services which included everything from gardening to moat cleaning, a review in to the expense claims of MPs is set to be published by Sir Christopher Kelly.
In light of this, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has commented on the news that MPs may be set to rent their second home, along with millions of other Britons, by offering the politicians some advice.
The group recommends that MPs looking for flats to rent in Kensington or other boroughs of the capital should make sure they do their research, rather than rushing into choosing a home, as there is likely to be a huge variety on offer.
Next, the NLA states that people should insist on a written tenancy agreement, make sure their deposit is protected by an official government-authorised tenancy deposit protection scheme and ensure that their gas appliances are being serviced annually.
Finally, the group advises people keep in regular contact with their landlords.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said: "I am quite certain that many landlords would jump at the chance to let their property to MPs. It could well help to broaden MPs' understanding of the contribution the modern private-rented sector makes to the country's housing mix."
