New street market pilot scheme to open this month in Bowes Park
A new street market is due to undergo a trial next week in Bowes Park and has been supported by Haringey Council and the Bowes Park Community Association. Myddleton Road Market will be open from Sunday June 16th and hopes to create an interesting mix of stalls, entertainment and activities for a range of ages.
The organisers of the new street market are hoping that it will help to support small independent retailers whilst boosting overall trade in the area. It has been designed to bring the community together and provide a fun day out for everyone.
Haringey Borough Council has so far provided £5,000 towards this new pilot scheme, to help with marketing and start-up costs. It is hoped that the street market will have an enthusiastic response and good turn-out, meaning that it could then become a regular event.
Lucy Whitehead, one of the organisers, said: "Creating a trial of the Myddleton Road Market has been very exciting to do because Bowes Park really needs a market and people to return to the road. We hope everyone comes along on Sunday because we want Haringey Council to support a regular market and continue regenerating Bowes Park."
The market has been organised by a group of volunteers in an attempt to get the ball rolling on more regeneration projects in the area. If the market succeeds and becomes a regular event, it could lead to opportunities for more businesses and individuals.
Councillor Alan Strickland, cabinet member for economic development, said: "It's really great to see local people passionate about their area and volunteering their time to bring the community together like this. Markets are a great way of showing off the diverse range of products available in Haringey and I'd encourage people to come down to Myddleton Road and support independent trade."
The market will start at 11:00 and offers a diverse range of stalls, food and activities. Children will be able to get their faces painted whilst adults can enjoy the Pimm's tent. There will also be music played by buskers and other forms of entertainment.
