Haringey Council given the go-ahead to build affordable homes
Plans to build more than 100 affordable homes in Haringey have been given the green light, it has been announced.
Haringey Council are also set to build a number of family homes, and private rental properties across the borough.
The private developments will help to fund the council housing and free up other homes for social rent.
These new properties which were recently approved by the council's planning committee will be part of the first wave of housing, on a programme which will increase domestic residents within the area.
Commenting in the developments, Councillor Alan Strickland, cabinet member for Regeneration and Housing, said: "Every family in Haringey has the right to live in a modern, affordable high-quality home, and these first new council houses demonstrate our commitment to making that a reality.
"While we’re working on long-term plans to bring thousands of homes for the future, we’re determined to get cracking now on building new council properties that give more choices to residents struggling to find an affordable place to live."
The local authority has also unveiled further plans to build more new homes at other small sites in the borough.
In addition, it is launching a new initiative to consult with residents living in poor-quality housing on larger estates on how best to bring them up to a more acceptable standard.
Figures published by the council revealed that nearly 1,500 new affordable homes have been built in Haringey in the last five years.
However it also has further plans to build an additional 10,000 properties as part of regeneration schemes in Tottenham and Wood Green over the next decade or so.
This new drive to build affordable homes comes after the council spearheaded a home energy improvement scheme in which it offered tenants assistance in making major green upgrades to their properties.
