Haringey Council announces plans to build 5,000 homes
Thousands of new homes are set to be built across Haringey, it has been announced.
Haringey Council recently announced plans to build up to 5,000 new homes in Tottenham Hale by 2025 after the government's plans to create housing zones across the UK were approved.
Haringey Council leader Claire Kober welcomed the initiative that was unveiled by the government and the Greater London Authority.
Some 20 zones will be built on brownfield sites across London, and around £400,000 will be pumped into the project.
Haringey Council has worked with the Mayor’s Office to test the concept in Tottenham Hale.
Commenting on the scheme, Ms Kober, said: "Today’s announcement is a vote of confidence in Tottenham that shows that all levels of government recognise Tottenham Hale has the potential to become one of London’s key growth areas.
"We’re clear that our bid for a housing zone would put new affordable homes, high-quality design and a mixture of tenures at the heart of any plans."
In addition to the 5,000 homes, the council has also injected £350 million into the Hale Village scheme project that has already seen nearly 2,000 new houses and student apartments linked to Central Saint Martins College.
Later this year, work will also begin on Tottenham Hale Station after proposals to transform the site were approved by the council’s planning committee.
It will mark the completion of a £110 million project to improve transport at Tottenham Hale, with a redesigned bus station open by autumn 2014.
Ms Kober, added: "Our ambition is for a Tottenham Hale where thousands of new families are helped onto the housing ladder, taking advantage of the revolution in transport links that is already underway.
"We are committed to bringing long-term regeneration to Tottenham Hale that benefits our residents with better homes and long-lasting employment opportunities."
