Government 'needs to ensure housing stock'
Affordable housing experts have claimed that more needs to be done to ensure that new decently priced housing arrives on the market in a quantity great enough to meet demand.
With London suffering a more acute housing shortage than many other UK regions, commuters in the capital are often led to rent, but the National Housing Federation claimed that the government could do more to boost supply.
Recent reports have suggested that second home ownership is placing strains on the housing stock, with YouGov research revealing that there will be 405,000 UK second homes by 2015 – while many fail to get on the property ladder.
A spokesman for the National Housing Federation, said: "What we need to do is focus on the supply of new housing.
"The government has said that it wants to increase house building and Gordon Brown has said that it's a great cause for our time, so this really needs to follow through and make sure that these commitments actually do result in more homes being built."
He added that the government needed to ensure that housing associations delivered the affordable homes they planned to, while also facilitating the release of new land for housing.
