Ealing to see new recycling service
Ealing Council announced yesterday (August 12th) that it has launched its new recycling scheme for residents. This innovative project means that people out and about in the borough don't have to send recyclable items to a landfill, as they can use the new bins that have been placed around the area.
The 'on the go' bins are hoped to contribute to the council's target of increasing the amount of household waste that is recycled to 50 per cent. So far, five of them have been unveiled in Ealing, but more are to come if the scheme is judged a success.
Residents can put mixed paper - which includes newspapers, magazines and paper napkins - plastics, drinks cans and food tins in the new recycle bins. They can all be placed in the same one as well, meaning residents don't have to sort through their rubbish or go hunting for the correct bin.
Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "The new service has extended the boundaries of recycling to outside the house, making it possible for residents to recycle even more. The bins complement our fast paced lifestyle, and now, whether you’re at home or outdoors, you can recycle and help the environment."
However, one of the most exciting aspects of the bins for Ealing residents is their design. They will be covered in artwork created by the borough's young people, brightening up the area for all.
People aged between five and 16 entered a competition to have their art featured on the bins, and the top 20 out of more than 100 entries were selected. Each artwork is themed around the environment, with entrants having to include an eco-friendly message into their piece.
The five bins are located in Ealing Common, Northala Fields, Acton Park, Elthorne Park and Norwood Green.
