Bromley: Council to give a facelift to Beckenham
Beckenham town centre in Bromley is set to get a multi-million pound revamp after the council unveiled plans to transform the area.
Around £3.2 million was pumped into improving the main junction. In addition, new lighting columns, street furniture and wider pavements will be added.
The improvements are part of efforts by Bromley Council to improve the pedestrian and shopping experience in the district.
Funding for the project will come from Transport for London (TFL) and the local authority.
Commenting on the developments, Peter Morgan, executive councillor for renewal and recreation, said that it is currently an "exciting time for Beckenham town centre".
He added: "This bid will support our ongoing work and the vitality of the town. Beckenham has a thriving community and a diverse and successful range of independent businesses, specialist shops, restaurants and cafes and is a fantastic place to live and work.
"Public realm improvements improve the local economy and trading environment and will support the future economic vibrancy of the centre and enhance its historic heritage."
As part of the initiative, the council have carried out consultations among local residents groups and stakeholders to gather their views about the works - which are due to begin in 2016.
"We are continuing to work closely with the Beckenham town centre working party and other stakeholders to ensure a joined up approach that will ensure our town is best positioned for the future," Mr Morgan explained.
However, these are not the only redevelopment projects taking place in the area. Last month, Bromley Council announced that the second phase of improvements on Bromley North Village has been started.
The project included new paving, pedestrian areas, lights and street furniture. It also included Thames Water mains replacement works, which cost more than £5.2 million, took place in the northern section of Market Square.
