A little area that feels big as a Tardis, Mottingham borders the Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich areas and takes great things from all of them, whilst maintaining an identity for itself - not an easy trick.
Maybe it's the result of being passed between areas like a suburban football that has given Mottingham access and resources far beyond its size. Its access to London and other areas of South London - as well as Kent - are excellent, which make it a favourite for those working locally as well as anyone going into the city on a regular basis.
Given that it was still a rural hamlet until the mid-19th Century, it's no surprise for anyone trawling Mottingham to find that its houses tend to begin from this period. Houses in the village of Mottingham are mostly - as is usual in the area - Victorian. There are semis around, but many homes are terraced. The actual build quality is excellent, the roads very quiet as the village isn't a major through-route.
The area is alone, it seems sometimes, in a sea of green - again, it benefits from the outlying green spaces of the boroughs it orbits. Elmstead, Marvels and the lovely Chislehurst Woods (with its famous caves) are right up against it. But to characterise it as removed would be wrong, as along with access to open, airy places Mottingham is well placed to take advantage of the excellent schools of the Southeast, with selectives and comprehensives all around and a very good level of education found for any age. The village itself has excellent shopping in the form of the Kimeridge Cross centre, as well as those in the village itself, which the locals tend to prefer above schlepping into the city or to outlying areas.
Its connection into the city, its relative privacy and excellent resources make Mottingham a good choice for any professional or commuter family.
