In the southern lee of Woolwich and across from Charlton and Blackheath, Plumstead is little known outside its immediate vicinity - which is unfair and unjust, given its excellent houses, great location and wonderful green space.

Plumstead is a cheerful, multicultural suburb that lies just off the Shooters Hill Road. Its aspect, looking down the hill, gives some areas here - quietly - some of the best views in London, looking out across the river towards Canary Wharf and the city beyond. Plumstead itself has two centres, one near the Common - with a spread of friendly locals, cafes and shops overlooking the Common itself - and the other further down the hill as Plumstead becomes a little more urban, and turns quickly into Woolwich. Plumstead Common may be one of the least-known gems in London's annals of green space (which is considerable - it's one of the greenest capitals in the world). A small but very pretty park, it's quiet, popular with dogwalkers and runners, and rolls gently down the hill towards the river. Other green areas around here include the fields around Woolwich Arsenal, and the ancient Oxley Woods, just over the Shooters Hill Road, one of the oldest remaining woodlands in the area.

Around the park and just off the main roads that lead into Plumstead are excellent roads of Victorian terraces. Some of these are subdivided of course, and there are flats and maisonettes to be found. But many, especially the most desirable around the Shooters Hill and Common areas, are in their original condition, perfect suburban houses of medium size, many with good gardens. There are also purpose built blocks on the way down towards Woolwich (many newer ones under development).

Plumstead is still affordable though it provides excellent access and brilliant houses bordering one of London's most little known and prettiest green spaces. It's on the up, however, and viewing should be done quickly.
