Area Comments
Since the rediscovery of Brockley in the late 1990s people have been kicking themselves for not getting into the area. Those looking for homes in the area now are in for a treat.
Brockley is a centre for the bohemian, the relaxed and cosmopolitan, as well as some of the finest houses and flats in South London; it has a gentrified, but still slightly down at heel, ambience which makes it a supremely relaxed and comfortable place to be.
Properties are mostly Victorian, many still surviving as houses but there are fantastic subdivided properties offering splendid flats, including some lovely garden flats. The Victorian properties which make up the majority of Brockley housing share their space with several larger blocks and council or ex-council estates built more recently, but the Victoriana is king here.
Situated as it is between Hilly Fields, Blythe Hill and Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries, Brockley has access to some of the finest views and best green spaces in the area. This, along with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the still-affordable family homes, makes it perfect for kids. Another element that makes Brockley fabulous for children is the wealth of schools and universities in the area - Goldsmiths College is right nearby, as is Haberdashers Askes, one of the best secondary schools in South London, as well as Prendergast School with its Grade II listed building.
Socially Brockley is excellently geared up for relaxation. It's got great boho cafes and delis, excellent local shops and bars and restaurants, and the influx of the artistic and left-leaning population has reached its culmination in Tea Leaf Arts Centre, a co-operative opening in 2008.
Brockley is Green politically as well as in terms of its parks, bohemian, accepting and a wonderful place to live. Property is affordable still, but competition has increased a little from when the area was the best kept secret of SE4.
