By far the most affluent part of the affluent, friendly and commuter-centred Sidcup area, Blackfen's history might account for its status these days.
Blackfen was originally sited in the middle of three large estates - Danson, Lamorbey and Blendon, all of which lent their names to streets, regions and parks when they were sold on. The area still takes a lot of its structure from being part of the Danson Estate, and Danson Park could be said to buttress its northern frontier; one of the least known but prettiest of South London parks, Danson provides green space and boating amongst its amenities.
Blackfen contains the most sought after properties in Sidcup, which is an area with a great range of properties in it and thus a large range of prices. Blackfen is known for large houses, mostly built in the early part of the 20th Century, with excellent gardens and plenty of space. Other properties - straddling the Blackfen Road - are mostly semidetached 1930s buildings of 3-4 bedrooms.
Amenities in Blackfen include a deceptive amount of green space, not merely Danson Park to the north, but the rich urban wild spaces that fringe the River Shuttle which runs through the area. The local wetlands provide five small woods and parks in easy walking distance, and are a great attraction to the relatively well-off families which make up the majority of Blackfen's population.
Good schools are plentiful locally with the Blackfen School for Girls being the most obvious - but there are great primary and secondary schools all around. Shopping alternatives include local stores selling the necessities, a larger number of bigger stores in Sidcup, as well as venturing further afield to nearby Bexleyheath for the big names and high street brands.
Blackfen is a comfortable and easy distance from London and from Kent for days out. It makes a perfect base for families, and is an easy commute. Busy people who don't want the press of the city, yet want plenty of room for their loved ones, should give properties in Blackfen serious consideration.
