Filled with schools and well-apportioned housing, Beckenham is a garden suburb of London that anyone looking for a good sized property (whether you're a well-heeled first time buyer, or looking to trade up into a bigger family home) needs to take a tour around.
London's remarkable ability to create a village atmosphere within shouting distance of the city is seen nowhere better than in Beckenham. This atmosphere comes partly from the architectural unity of its properties of course; most of the areas houses are Victorian. These are mostly found semi-detached and terraces houses - mostly two-storey - which throng the centre of the village. Prices here are robust, but not prohibitive. The local population is heavily weighted towards the well-heeled family, and thus levels of decor and facilities in most properties are extremely high.
Outside the centre of the village, broad and green leafy roads provide splendid settings for Beckenham's golf courses and seemingly endless parks; they also give plenty of room for the extremely desirable and attractive detached houses which are the area's top properties. All of these are large, well apportioned and quickly snapped up when they come on the market. There are also some limited, but again very desirable, bespoke apartment developments which mainly cater to the affluent professional or couple - and which again require quick viewing!
Catering to a relatively wealthy and choosy populace has meant that Beckenham's high street has become dominated by excellent and popular, high-quality eateries and cafes, as well as pleasant local shops. There are larger supermarket chains within reach, many brand-name stores lining the streets, as well as individual local retailers selling bespoke decor, art and other goods.
Beckenham feels removed from the bustle of London, although it gets lively enough in the evenings and weekends; but its two rail stations link it to London and the Southeast, and Croydon, Bromley and Wimbledon are within a stone's throw. For any up and coming family, or the professional looking for a leafy, luxurious suburb to hang their hat, Beckenham is a desirable choice.
