To the north of Orpington, Petts Wood is a pleasant suburb within easy reach of London and providing excellent access to Kent and the coast.
The character of Petts Wood is very residential - which is no surprise, given that the whole area was begun as a housing project in the 1930s, as the population of London increased. The plan to provide good housing paid off: Petts Wood has some of the finest and best made houses in the area.
But whilst many of the planned communities of the 20th Century feel undesigned, slightly unnatural, Petts Wood was conceived much more fully as an organic community. It still maintains this character today, as its residential areas are centred on a very busy, varied shopping area which leads towards the train station (well placed for Kent and London stops). In the pretty little Station Square particularly, you'll find excellent little village-style shops that made the area feel like it must have done then - a friendly little garden community. There are excellent little cafes and grocers, as well as a smattering of other independent stores in this area. If you need more general shopping, of course, Petts Wood is very close to Orpington. Though there are good little local restaurants and pubs, Chislehurst and Bromley, with their huge range of entertainments, restaurants and shops, are also very close.
Petts Wood housing is literally made for commuters and families. There are neat little roads of the mid-war housing that the area started off which - nice semis and terraces with good gardens of medium size. But there are also properties built later, during the immediate postwar era - much larger, detached houses with substantial grounds, which lead towards Chislehurst and other areas. All are very fine, and all provide excellent living solutions for the growing families and busy suburban lifestyles of the people who this village was quite simply built for.
