Green and busy, perfect for commuters and families, Elmers End (together with Eden Park) is one of the best bets for really beautiful homes that won't shatter your budget.
With a large green at its centre, Elmers End has an open space that many suburbs would envy already built in. Of course, in this area of the south east, there are plenty of green spaces nearby. The parade that lines the green includes some busy local shops, and there are larger stores within very easy reach whether you wend towards Croydon or Beckenham, both of which are quite close.
Property here is mostly based on the 1930s terrace and semi, with plenty of these large, internally spacious houses on offer. There are a few streets however of Victorian houses as well. In the centre, near the rail station, the pressure of catering to the hungry commuter market has led to some very nice apartment blocks being erected and these are great for single professionals or couples. Towards the northern part, Upper Elmers End and Eden Park, there are some larger detached houses which are amongst the most desirable in the area.
