A truly excellent suburb in an area typified by many such, Selsdon is very countrified, and offers excellent value for money as well as a lovely local community. It's basically a suburb of Croydon, but feels very different, and very much more relaxed, and more a part of Surrey.
Families come to Selsdon for good houses, but also excellent local schools. It's a peaceful and rural area, with Selsdon Vale particularly countrified, but the whole area feels very far from a city despite being basically part of Croydon. There's excellent local green spaces - it's surrounded by parks and there's a popular local nature reserve and bird sanctuary here in the Selsdon Wood area - and it has a good village centre, with all the usual amenities and shops, but with a mighty supermarket not far (with attached community centre); basically you can have your cake and eat it here, getting as much or as little of the urban Croydon as you like before retreating to Selsdon itself.
The properties here are most notably its splendid collection of Art Deco houses, which are striking, and the best evidence for the suburb's development during the 1920s and 30s. There are still some of the lovely midwar properties around, beautifully kept and offering excellent homes. Much of Selsdon's property though is of a later 20th Century mould, but despite this is mostly very well built, the 1960s and 70s houses and maisonettes, and some purpose built flats, offering excellent homes to families and commuters.
