Area Comments
Southwest London is stuffed with lovely suburbs to a degree that in any decent world would embarrass it. Yet the region flaunts its splendid suburbs with pride, and Norbury is good enough to stand tall with all of them.
The access and facilities in Norbury are essentially the same as Streatham, on whose southern border it sits. This means excellent transport into London and a thriving little town centre, hugely multicultural, filled with places to eat and drink, sit right next door. Norbury itself is quieter, calmer than its slightly noisy neighbour, but with good local shops where all the essentials are found, as well as a sprinkling of popular locals and eateries. Naturally enough, you're also within a very quick trip to the large number of huge local supermarkets for larger grocery gathering.
Sitting right in the centre of South London (it's as near perfectly due South of Charing Cross as you can be) also means excellent green areas - which, despite the proximity of Streatham Common, predominately urban Streatham is not. Nearby is Norbury Park, just north of the village station, which is very popular with locals - small enough to take in easily but large enough to be a true local park rather than a common. Youre also well placed with access to the schools immediately around as well as (nicely strategic) excellently situated for schools both west and east - of which there are a huge number.
Like much of Southwest London, Norbury blends the Victorian and the Edwardian when it comes to its good stock of housing. All over the area, particularly on the borders of Streatham, there are found houses of prodigious size - there are quite a lot with up to 6 bedrooms - all with appropriate gardens and excellent for large families. There are also great conversions, more so with the mature market of the last few years and plenty of upwardly mobile, demanding couples, professionals and young families looking for maisonette living: a badly fitted conversion is rare these days. But the mainstay of the area is a generally even mix - with a huge range between them - of Victorian, 1930s and Edwardian build houses of 3-4 bedrooms. Semis, terraced houses and little cottages are all found in the area, and all provide excellent solutions for the young family or professional couple looking for space.
