Anywhere that Tony Hancock used to live must be great. But there are loads of other reasons to set your cap for Cheam - and top of the list must be its cheerful and effortless blend of town and country.
Although a commuter centre, Cheam isn't just popular with those seeking to bustle easily into town - although you can certainly do that. A remarkably attractive, pretty village, Cheam sits in the middle of some of the finest open spaces in the Surrey suburbs. Chief amongst these are of course Cheam Park and the famous Nonsuch Park, part of Henry VIII's deer park, both of which are easily accessed from the centre of the village itself. But as well as country feel you get urban access to shopping and dining, with Cheam itself having good local stores, and the restaurants and stores of Croydon, Kingston and Richmond easy to get to in a few minutes. Nightlife is sparse in Cheam itself, although the outlying areas such as Richmond and Kingston offer a lot of choice, and Sutton's nightlife is also gaining in strength. Other facilities include some of the best schools in the country at secondary level and excellent primaries catering to the families in the region.
Properties in Cheam tend towards the family home, but there is a strong rental market as well with many flats available in the 1930s blocks which dot the area and provide great homes for the commuter. The properties are mostly Edwardian semis in the north of the area, but there are rows of Edwardian and Victorian houses in the south. The area is of course - like much of this part of Surrey - highly sought after, and so anyone looking at a house in Cheam should consider moving fast to secure it.
