Mostly developed as a true suburb in the 1920s and 30s, Purley is now one of the key suburbs in the area, and in a sense the Purley Way marks the boundary between the true suburbs of Croydon and London, and the beginning of the depths of well-heeled Surrey. Like many areas of Southwest London, Purley has a mixed housing heritage, but is known for very spacious homes in a very green, leafy environment of wide streets. A notable area is the Webb Estate, which had - in 2002 - the highest earning residents in the UK. Most houses are 1920s and 1930s in build, large and roomy, excellently maintained and are extremely desirable.

Shopping is excellent in Purley. For staples is has huge supermarkets and light industrial estates along the wide Purley Way, and of course excellent ranges of high-street brands in the very near Croydon. But the suburb's town centre itself is a choosy, fashion conscious and boutiquey place, along with some plush little eateries and local gastropubs to cater to those who lunch. Socially this is a much more cosmopolitan and relaxing place than its slightly conservative image makes out; it's a great place for young people, with fantastic local schools and a huge range of activities for any age, ranging from swimming to bowling and the great amenities of the green spaces which abound in the area.

This is a fantastic place to live in, still much more affordable than comparable areas such as Richmond or Kew, but green, great for kids, with fantastic schools and excellent things to do. Look now!
