Area Comments
Wonderful, open and relaxed Herne Hill is one of the little gems of South London.
Sandwiched between Brixton and Dulwich, Herne Hill takes its character (naturally enough) a little bit from both. It has a bit of quirky funkyness, but also a real gentility and 'rural-urban' character that makes this area feel unlike most other suburbs. The area has wonderful restaurants and great local bars such as the Prince Regent (a real Sunday Lunch pub and very kid-friendly); there are excellent local baker and cafes and the whole area is being pushed very much into the middle-class (more Dulwich-y) upmarket world, without losing its relaxed and friendly, multicultural base.
As Herne Hill descends into the little village centre, it opens up before you to provide the southern approach to the lovely urban green space that is Brockwell Park. Walks around here provide a fantastic view of the surrounding area and a real feeling of being outside the city. Brockwell Lido has been given a magnificent facelift and is now once again one of the best open air pools in London, and provides a café, a gym and other facilities: as in other areas, this is in response to the gradual middle class push into Herne Hill, and represents suburban regeneration at its best. There is also a local velodrome.
As well as Herne Hill station, it's easy to get to Dulwich, Denmark Hill and Brixton amongst others. This is a connected place, easy to get anywhere from. This, and its generally excellent property, make Herne Hill a very popular place to live at the moment.
Property here is stable and usually predictable, in a good way. This is a suburb of wonderful Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many of which have excellent gardens. There are larger properties which have been sensitively subdivided and made into collections of lovely flats. Almost all the houses here, situated in its quiet streets (even Herne Hill's larger thoroughfares such as the Hill itself, are quiet) and under its well spaced trees, are attractive, modern, yet distinctive places to live.
Cool, friendly, cosmopolitan and with excellent access, Herne Hill is a wonderful place to live.
