Clean-up campaign for Petts Wood
Residents of the London borough of Bromley will no doubt have noticed something of a sparkle about their local area recently following the success of the Big Bromley Brush-Up campaign, designed to make the district a cleaner and safer place to live and work.
Petts Wood was the latest place to receive the treatment, with around 40 volunteers contributing to the effort, which included cleaning alleyways, footpaths and car parks across the area.
Participants were proud to announce they had filled 100 bags with rubbish, with some of the more unusual items including an old door and some unwanted carpet besides the usual plastic bottles, cigarette butts and sweet wrappers the volunteers expected to find.
While litter picking and general cleaning is a prominent feature of the campaign, volunteers also worked hard to remove overgrown vegetation, weeds and graffiti in a comprehensive effort to clean up London's streets.
"Thanks to the invaluable help and support of our volunteers, this is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by working together," said councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for Environment.
"Whether you're part of the campaign or not, I would encourage everyone to do their bit, by either picking up any rubbish they see or reporting it to the council," he added.
Mr Smith also advised residents to use the popular 'Fix It' feature on the council's website to notify the local authority of any wear-and-tear in the community that requires the attention of an expert.
"As an ongoing campaign, the aim is to join together in keeping our neighbourhoods clean and tidy," he said.
The Bromley Brush-Up Campaign is designed to encourage positive environmental behaviour as well as a sense of community spirit that gives residents an extra service without impacting on the standard daily street cleaning routines.
Bromley's community also features a number of other groups and campaigns designed to make life more pleasant for those living in the area, including Snow Friends and Friends of Parks.
