Area Comments
A cheerful little suburb between Shooters Hill and Bexleyheath, Welling is one of the oldest places in this area, but it feels modern; it's also a great place for a good property deal.
Welling's position gives it the kind of access to town and coast that those in Sidcup, Blackfen and other areas have, but the cost of living here is relatively low in comparison. It also has a superb town centre, one of the longest and most developed High Streets in London. Around this main road are strung excellent roads with good houses, whilst along it is a huge array of shops, cafes, restaurants and grocers. You really are spoilt for choice here, and you're also spoilt when it comes to places to visit for wider shopping and socialising: Bexleyheath is a local capital of shopping, eating and drinking, but Eltham is also close, as are Greenwich and Blackheath with their historical, affluent eateries and watering holes. Bluewater is also very close indeed.
Greenery is easily come across, with superb walks in Oxleas Wood back over Shooters Hill, and the local Danson Park is the favourite place for local runners and dog-walking. Lots of schools are found nearby, both Primary and Secondary.
In terms of housing, Welling is quite uniform - it essentially is an area of 1930s semidetached houses, many with offstreet parking, good gardens and a roomy build. There are excellent streets of these houses to the south and north of the Welling High Street, but the best and most desirable are those in the estate around Danson Park.
Welling is very friendly, a great local community and the kind of place where everyone knows their neighbours. Its low costs of living and nearby facilities make it a good choice for first timers or cost-conscious families.
