Phase two of Aylesbury Estate regeneration finished
The second phase of the regeneration project taking place at Aylesbury Estate in Southwark has been completed.
It is one of the biggest programmes of development being undertaken by Southwark Council and the finished site will be known as Totters Court. Some 18 new, high-quality residences - which are a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership properties to part-buy and part-rent - have been built.
In total, 261 dwellings will be constructed by the end of the phase, which will be able to house up to 847 people. It means anyone looking at flats to rent in Southwark should see an increase in the available options going forward.
John Lumley, development manager at L&Q - the housing association collaborating with the local authority on the project - labelled the scheme as historic.
"We are committed to creating the kinds of high-quality homes that people need and want to live in; the Aylesbury regeneration scheme is a fantastic example of how councils and housing providers can work closely with residents and local communities to provide exactly that," he added.
Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, observed the success of the programme is "testament to the council and its partners' absolute commitment to driving this regeneration project forward".
Mr John went on to note he is confident this is only the start of the improvements to the area, as it develops into one of the best places to live in Central London.
With the Queen's diamond jubilee around the corner, the area is getting into the spirit by organising 50 street parties. This is 28 more than the royal wedding and highlights how the community is keen to put on inclusive activities.
Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for the Olympics, added it is great to see so many people coming together to celebrate the momentous occasion. Part of the reason for the hike in interest was the introduction of a simplified planning application.
