New council premises create space for hundreds of new homes in Bexleyheath
Work on the former Woolwich Building Society head office in Bexleyheath is underway. The building is being refurbished and is set to become the new base for Bexley Council in spring next year. Part of the refurbishment process will also be the construction of 126 new homes.
Work has begun on the rear on the building in order to prepare it for the construction of the new residential properties. Mace is the lead contractor on the job and will be constructing a range of one, two, three and four bedroom homes. In total the site will include 78 apartments and 48 houses, with 27 properties planned on being offered for shared ownership. Sale of the properties will be beginning on Saturday June 22nd at the sales office in Erith Road.
This is not the only regeneration project to be happening in the borough. Several projects are planned as part of the Bexley First programme being operated by Bexley Council. Once the Woolwich Building Society refurbishment process is complete, council staff from four separate sites will be moving in to create the council's new base of operations.
Bexley first will also be part of the construction of new homes in Slade Green and Welling. The programme has also been providing funding for improvements within schools throughout the area.
The refurbishment of the former building society property will also include several environmentally friendly and energy saving fixtures. Incorporating higher levels of insulation in the roof and the walls and fitting new windows will help to reduce the running cost of the building. Solar panels will also be fitted to the roof, allowing the building to generate its own electricity.
The Civic Offices project, which will see the council all under one roof, is being funded by the rental or sale of the offices currently being used by the council. The project will also save the council over one million pounds every year as well as creating space for around 700 new homes to be built throughout the borough. ?
