Bank withholds interest rate relief again
Bank of England officials have once again declined to lower the base rate of borrowing, dealing a blow to London property owners who are struggling to maintain their mortgage repayments.
The Home Builders Federation had asked for a dramatic 0.5 per cent cut to rates to slow the property downturn.
It argued a full-blown crash in the housing market would have devastating consequences for the wider economy, but the Bank's nine-member Monetary Policy Committee decided otherwise.
Inflation reached three per cent in April - one full percentage point above the target rate - and with no end in sight for food and fuel price hikes analysts had widely predicted rates would remain unchanged.
"The Bank had little option this month other than to leave interest rates on hold," declared Ian McCafferty of the Confederation of British Industry. "Oil and commodity prices are still of great concern and businesses are having to raise prices as profit margins get squeezed further."
On top of the woes facing homeowners, people looking for property for sale in London are also feeling the pinch due to the tightened availability of mortgages.
