Art display showcases community spirit of Tottenham
A special art display is being exhibited at a Tottenham primary school.
Pupils at West Green Primary School on Woodlands Park Road were encouraged to show their love for the area. After visiting their favourite places, the children then created a number of artworks based on what they saw.
These are now being showed off at the learning centre and parents looking at property to rent in Tottenham may be impressed by this initiative. Markfield Park, the River Lea, Bruce Castle Park and St John Vianney's Church are among the locations that have been brought to life thanks to the imagination of the school kids.
West Green Primary headteacher Vivette Sewell remarked: "The riots in Tottenham last summer were very disturbing for members of our community, especially the younger ones. West Green is a very multicultural school and, as one of our pupils told Ofsted inspectors, 'feels like a big family'".
In order to channel the creative talents of the students in the right manner, the I Love Tottenham programme was created. It seeks to "amplify [the] sense of community" and the work on display is evidence of this, she added.
Haringey Council deputy leader and cabinet member for children councillor Lorna Reith observed it is great to see people "celebrating what they like best about the areas they call home". She added West Green Primary school has done a fantastic job in bringing together all of the artwork and fostering a real sense of togetherness.
Sharon Grant of the Tottenham Community Panel - which was set up in the aftermath of last year's riots - noted it is vital that youngsters feel a level of ownership with their area. She continued by saying the project offers kids the chance to showcase the sense of pride they feel about where they are from.
