Affordable scheme gets underway in Tottenham
An affordable housing scheme is underway in Tottenham and was recently launched by MP David Lammy.
Isobel Place was developed by Newlon Housing Trust, which worked in collaboration with Haringey Council and English Heritage. It will shortly undergo its second round of regeneration.
The 109-home development is located on the site of a derelict former depot behind Tottenham Town Hall and has undergone many changes; including a new clock tower that replicates the original site architecture, as well as new homes.
Councillor Alan Strickland, Haringey Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and housing, and Petr Smr?ek, a deputy minister from the Czech Republic were among the other guests at the opening ceremony.
Commenting on the developments, councillor Strickland, said: "Tottenham Green is central to the regeneration of Tottenham, and residents have made it clear they feel very strongly that it is the heart of Tottenham.
"Regeneration isn’t just about bricks and mortar, so high-quality affordable housing like this is crucial so that families can build a life here and see their children grow up in a safe and secure community."
Councillors in Tottenham had recently come under pressure from residents and campaign groups, such as 'Our Tottenham', which said that more should be done to boost the provision of affordable homes in the area.
This scheme marks a step forward in the move towards realising that goal.
Sarah Ebanja, chair of Newlon Housing Trust, said: "I am really proud that this beautiful new development is providing new high quality affordable homes for local people and has brought this formerly derelict site and the Town Hall back into use for the benefit of the local community."
