South Kensington: The most desirable of London postcodes

South Kensington: The most desirable of London postcodesSouth Kensington is one of the most desired areas where it comes to people looking to live in London. With stunning property choices, some of the world's most celebrated museums and its close proximity to the centre of the capital; it is no wonder that the area attracts many of the more affluent classes.

The entirety of South Kensington is incredibly beautiful and offers a number of activities for visitors and residents alike. There are plenty of shopping opportunities, many places to go for top class food and drink and some stunning spatterings of nature throughout the borough. It is no surprise then that to live in South Kensington, you require a slightly larger purse than if you were looking to live in some of the outer boroughs. However, the increase in cost is well worth it for all of the benefits of having such a desirable postcode.

Where it all began

South Kensington has been a popular London destination for a number of years. Before it was a busy hub within the city, the area was rich farmland. That was all changed in 1851 when the Great Exhibition was set up in Hyde Park, making the borough into a popular and exclusive place to live.

As interest in the area grew, many buildings sprung up throughout South Kensington. Several structures were used to display the latest scientific advances and art for the first ever Cultural and Industry Fair. These buildings have since become some of the most world-renowned museums. Once the underground came to South Kensington, the area exploded and has remained popular ever since.

Choice of properties

The housing opportunities within South Kensington are stunning, and as such come with a high price tag. However, if you can afford it, it really is worth spending the money so that you can take advantage of the elegant offerings. As well as the usual spacious apartments, there are also housing options in the area, the majority of which are found of clean, tree-lined streets. The townhouses are reminiscent of a scene from Mary Poppins, and offer a rich history that is all their own.

Every bit of South Kensington is considered to be prime location and there is no part of the area that is less desirable than anywhere else. As such rental prices range from £1,000 to £26,000 a month, but with this costs come the knowledge that you are within range of some of the very best schools, speedy transportation and amazing shopping opportunities.

Flexing the plastic

South Kensington is the place to go in London for shopping. Not only does it cater to the on-trend fashionistas, but those with more abstract tastes will also find their needs met. Sloane Avenue and Fulham Road are the best places for those that enjoy a designer label, while a number of independent retailers and smaller shops offer everything else you could possibly require.

Commuting

The transport links in South Kensington truly are brilliant, allowing residents to commute easily to other areas of the city. A total of three underground routes serve the borough, allowing people to get around with the minimum of fuss.

Pedestrians are also catered for via a pedestrian tunnel that provides a safe walking route from the South Kensington Tube Station to the must-see museums.
