Plans to expand Orpington's Bromley Museum win approval
People seeking flats to rent in Orpington could welcome news that plans to extend the local Bromley Museum have cleared their first hurdle.
Revised plans for a first stage application for Heritage Lottery Fund assistance to expand the facility have been given the go-ahead, having been carefully tailored by Bromley Council to meet requirements.
The local authority has a number of proposals for improvements to the site at the Priory in Orpington, including making repairs to the Grade II listed building, as well as improving exhibition spaces and extending the visitor facilities.
Bromley Museum is considered to be a significant historical landmark within the area, as it is located inside a medieval building and houses various exhibits that detail elements of local culture and community issues.
The council wishes to improve accessibility via interconnecting spaces throughout the facility, as well as a new reception area, cafe, landscape viewing platform, atrium and lift.
Other plans include the reinstatement of the green court in front of the building, while new exhibition spaces would also be built to display more local artefacts.
Peter Morgan, Bromley's executive councillor for renewal and recreation, said that while none of these improvements have been confirmed as yet, this nevertheless represents exciting news for the local area.
"We have many interesting exhibits and these would be displayed to best effect in surroundings that visitors expect," he explained.
The plans to expand Bromley Museum come as part of the council's wider Orpington Master Plan, a town-wide regeneration scheme aimed at raising the area's profile and making it a more vibrant place to live.
So far, this project has led to various successful improvements to the high street and the relocation of Orpington library to the town centre, as well as the development of a new Tesco.
London mayor Boris Johnson presided over the opening of the new high street enhancements, which will help to attract retail investors to Orpington.
