New regeneration works to take place in Bromley
A number of improvements are being made in the London borough of Bromley which are designed to benefit residents in the area.
Work is set to begin on the pedestrianised area of Market Square in January, which will see the installation of new granite paving, along with trees and lamp columns.
Thames Water will also be be replacing major water mains in the High Street.
The first phase of the regeneration works in the borough started earlier this year and is now complete. Over £5.2 million was pumped into the development of the Bromley North Village public realm scheme.
Bromley Council claims that the project will improve and provide an economic boost to the area. Peter Morgan, executive councillor for renewal and recreation, said there has already been a lot of support for the scheme.
He added: "This major improvement to East Street underlines our commitment to improving town centres and ensuring people want to shop, trade and spend time in the area. We are already hearing early indications from agents of shops being let and increased footfall showing the value in the scheme. We are committed to playing our part to ensure that Bromley remains an enticing place for business and investment."
The scheme will see the regeneration of Market Square, High Street North and East Street areas of Bromley town centre.
New pavement surfaces, street furniture, lights, plants and pedestrian exits will be installed as part of the initiative.
The council claims that this will improve trade for the businesses in the area and attract new independent firms and independent retailers.
Before work began on the scheme, companies, residents and other stakeholders in the area were consulted and asked to give their input about the developments.
Funding for the project comes from a partnership between the council, Transport for London and the Mayor's Outer London Fund.
