Chelsea introduces new two-way cycling scheme
Cyclists occupying flats to rent in Chelsea will see a new two-way cycling scheme introduced for selected one-way streets across the local area.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea will be introducing 'No entry' signs with 'Except cycles' plates added to certain restricted streets over the coming months, with the aim of implementing two-way cycling on these routes by the end of the year.
Permission to introduce this programme has been given by the Department for Transport following the success of a trial scheme in 2009, which resulted in no additional personal injury collisions.
The streets chosen for inclusion in the two-way riding scheme were selected on the basis of feedback from cyclists, plus the location of London Bike Hire stations.
Speed levels, traffic flow and personal injury statistics were also taken into account, leading to a number of routes being dismissed as too busy.
According to the council, offering two-way cycling on the selected streets can help bike users to access more direct routes, while improving safety by allowing them to avoid more congested areas.
Nick Paget-Brown, deputy leader and cabinet member for transport at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, said: "We've always listened to cyclists and championed helping them to move more freely around the borough.
"Since the scheme was first piloted we have closely monitored road safety statistics in the participating one-way streets. The figures have stacked up and shown that two-way cycling poses no more of a danger to motorists, pedestrians or cyclists."
This comes after a safety initiative was conducted in the borough earlier this month, during which cyclists were stopped by police for riding on the pavement or running red lights.
In exchange for waiving a fine, those who were stopped were asked to sit in the cab of a lorry to be talked through how easy it is for bike users to become obscured by blind spots.
