Bromley Council to create extra accommodation for vulnerable residents
Bromley Council has increased the amount of temporary accommodation it has available by revamping a disused care home, it has announced.
The local authority saved over £250,000 by adopting a ‘invest to save’ principle and upgrading the building that housed the former Manorfields care home.
This enabled the council to build 44 units of flexible accommodation, which will house some of the borough's most vulnerable people.
The council said that the increase in the number of homeless people in addition to a shortage of affordable accommodation such as new build, housing association re-lets and private rented homes, has resulted in heightened demand for temporary accommodation.
Speaking about the developments, Bromley Council leader, Councillor Stephen Carr said: "This is a good example of an invest-to-save project where an initial outlay of Council funds is considered prudent to effect greater savings over time.
"The growing need for accommodation for homeless families is just one of the pressures on council services at a time when we are required to find a further £60 million savings over the next four years in addition to £61 million already made."
The council said that although the renovation is expected to cost a little over half a million pounds, it will be outweighed by the money gained from the homes over the next five years.
This new development follows on from a similar scheme launched a year ago where the local authority provided properties for more than 60 families, as part of an initiative in which vulnerable families were also given assistance in securing more long-term housing.
The new properties are expected to be up and running by March 2015, if planning approval is granted for the project.
Mr Carr added: "We investigate the delivery of all our services – whether statutory or not - to ensure we make the best use of taxpayers’ money by providing them as effectively and efficiently as possible."
