Bexleyheath to be revitalised by construction project
Residents living in the London borough of Bexley have something to look forward to, with construction work on Bexleyheath town centre gathering momentum and likely to finish not only on time but on budget as well.
With plans to remove the temporary one-way diversion around the middle of town by the end of May, it is hoped people from the district will be able to enjoy their brand new bustling hub from as early as the middle of June.
New additions to be completed by this time include an innovative redesign of Albion Road to form a clever 'gateway' to the town centre, an improved pedestrian crossing at Asda corner with a countdown signal and an attractive shared-surface public space in front of Christ Church in the Broadway.
Efforts will also be made to ensure the town centre is attractive to look at, with plans to plant new trees and install new street furniture to result in a tidier area that is more pleasurable to look at.
The project was commissioned with a view to revitalising Bexleyheath's drab high street, making it more accessible for buses and motorists. It is hoped the new town centre will attract more visitors to Bexley, stimulating the local economy and driving trade.
Councillor Gareth Bacon, Bexley's cabinet member for Environment and Public Realm, said that everything is being done to ensure the construction project remains on schedule, while apologising for the temporary inconvenience posed to motorists on their daily commute to and from work.
"Our officers and contractors continue to monitor the situation closely and take all possible actions, in consultation with the Bexley Business Partnership, to address any emerging traffic congestion," he added.
"I'm glad to say, as a result of these efforts, the number of people visiting the town centre during the busy Easter weekend was up."
