Bexley schools among best in country
In heartening news for the borough’s parents and young people, pupils at Bexley schools and colleges are progressing to higher education at some of the highest rates in the country.
According to the latest figures from the Department for Education (DfE), 66 per cent of A level or equivalent level qualification students in Bexley’s schools and colleges continue to higher education, placing the borough tenth in the ranking of England’s 152 local education authorities.
These findings will make the borough an ever more attractive option for people looking to move to London, and is likely to have an impact on local house prices. However, it need not have as much of an impact on those looking for flats to rent in Bexley, as rental prices in London are rising at much slower rates than house prices.
Borough councillors declared they were delighted at the young people’s achievements. Councillor John Fuller, who is the Cabinet Member for Education, described education as one of the council’s “top priorities”. He added: “The fact that students in our schools are doing so well is a credit to everyone involved, but particularly the students, their teachers and the borough's schools.”
These statements reflect a strong sense of a healthy community throughout the borough.
The figures refer to the 2010-11 academic year. In addition to the high level of university entry, the research found that a total of 78 per cent of Bexley’s 1,340 2010-11 A level students were in higher education, further education or training. Bexley was ranked 35th in the country using these criteria.
Academic high achievers were particularly well represented in the results, with an impressive 28 per cent of Bexley students taking up places at the top third of the country’s universities (in terms of selectiveness). Included in that figure are the 14 per cent who attended Russell Group universities, which include some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions of higher education.
